Every small business is dependent on electricity, gas, telecommunications, water, sewer, and other utilities. What would happen to your business if your utilities were disrupted for an extended period of time? Plan ahead and speak with your utility service providers about any potential alternatives and identify back-up options. Learn how and when to turn off your utilities. Consider the need for portable generators. Consider your communication needs. If you think cell phones are a valuable resource, how will you recharge the phones if the electricity is down for 3 or 4 days? If refrigeration is an issue, identify a vendor in advance that sells ice and dry ice. Every business will have its unique and specific exposures. Last but not least: review your insurance policy with your broker. Both your business personal property and your business income can be insured to help protect you during an extended utility interruption.
